Effervescence

Definition

The bubbling or 'fizzing' reaction that occurs when a carbonate mineral reacts with a weak acid (like hydrochloric acid or vinegar), releasing carbon dioxide gas.

Example

Calcite can be easily identified by its strong effervescence when a drop of vinegar is applied.

The Acid Test

Effervescence is the bubbling release of gas that occurs when a chemical reaction takes place in a liquid. In geology, it specifically refers to the reaction between carbonate minerals and weak acids. When dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) is dropped on Calcite (CaCO3), it chemically breaks down the stone, releasing Carbon Dioxide (CO2) gas, which creates visible fizzing and bubbling.

Diagnostic Tool

This is the definitive field test to distinguish <strong>Calcite</strong> (which fizzes vigorously) from <strong>Dolomite</strong> (which only fizzes if powdered) and <strong>Quartz</strong> (which does not fizz at all). It is a simple, reliable test that every geology student learns in their first week.
